The treatment mechanism effectively addresses pigmented lesions through non-invasive pigment destruction, following three distinct phases:
- Phase 1 - Targeted Light Absorption: The laser generates extremely short nanosecond pulses with significant energy, penetrating the skin without disrupting the surface. This energy is selectively absorbed by melanin pigments in the treatment area.
- Phase 2 - Controlled Pigment Fragmentation: The absorbed laser energy converts into photoacoustic waves that mechanically break down melanin pigments into microscopic particles.
- Phase 3 - Natural Elimination: These fragmented pigment particles are then processed and eliminated by the body's immune system, specifically through macrophages in the skin that naturally clear the treated area.

StarWalker is the ideal choice for pigment treatment
- The laser wavelength determines which pigments are preferentially absorbed and then selectively removed by the laser. Clinical studies have shown that superficial lesions can be treated effectively with the 532nm KTP laser, while the 1064nm Nd:YAG laser is used to target deeper pigments. In addition, the Q-switched laser integrated in the Fotona StarWalker QX system is particularly effective due to its extremely high energy source and its selective properties that also allow the pigments to be broken into small particles without affecting the cells. This means that the destruction of the pigment occurs without invading the skin structure.
